Sustainability

Our commitment to responsible travel

We are committed to the principles of sustainable development and responsible tourism.
This commitment extends beyond respecting the natural environment and wildlife—it also includes valuing local people and culture.

Below are the actions we take to promote sustainable and responsible tourism:

  • Support for local communities: As a small family business, we collaborate and operate with local communities, thereby creating income opportunities for other small local enterprises.

  • Locally sourced ingredients: Whenever possible, we use organic products in our kitchen, sourced directly from local producers such as fishermen, livestock farmers, and cultivators. This supports the local economy and ensures fresh, healthy meals for our guests.

  • Sustainable gardening: During the summer, we grow small amounts of vegetables in our garden and use collected rainwater for irrigation.

  • Berry and mushroom picking: We forage berries and mushrooms from nearby forests and use them in our meals.

  • Renewable energy: Our property is heated using renewable energy or low-energy devices.

  • Recycling and composting: We recycle and compost organic waste. We separately collect metal, glass, plastic, paper, cardboard, bottles, batteries, electronics, and textiles, and encourage our guests to do the same.

  • Reuse of materials: We reuse building materials and furniture whenever possible.

  • Eco-friendly activities: Our outdoor activities are mainly non-motorized, such as hiking and canoeing, and are designed to respect nature. A clean environment is our most important resource, and we aim to increase appreciation for it.

  • Environmental awareness: We share information and encourage our guests to learn about local plants and animals and their role in the ecosystem.

  • Small group focus: We work with small groups or individuals to minimize environmental impact and maximize safety and meaningful interactions with locals.

  • Accessible tourism: Some parts of our main building are suitable for accessible accommodation. Movement in the yard area is generally possible with standard mobility aids, and we can arrange, for example, an extra ramp to the pier if needed.

  • Eco-friendly cleaning: We use certified, eco-labeled cleaning products and soaps.

  • Minimizing waste: We avoid purchasing over-packaged products. For instance, we avoid individually packaged breakfast items and do not use single-use hygiene products in rooms or bathrooms.

  • Avoiding unnecessary consumption: We aim to minimize overconsumption and waste in our operations. We offer guests the possibility to rent gear, technical clothing, and footwear directly on-site. This allows for lighter travel while reducing unnecessary consumption.

  • Eco-friendly wastewater treatment: Our wastewater is treated using environmentally friendly methods.

  • Cultural integration: We respect local cultures and traditions in our operations and offer authentic programs that connect guests with Finnish history and traditions.

  • Inclusive experiences: Our accommodation and activities are safe and adaptable for everyone, regardless of age, neurodivergence, or physical ability.

  • Diversity and inclusion: We welcome guests from all religions, sexual orientations, political views, and backgrounds. Whenever possible, we hire local talent based on skills from diverse cultures and backgrounds. We also offer employment on social grounds in collaboration with the employment office.

  • Community involvement: We collaborate with local organizations and associations and participate in volunteer work.

  • Bird protection: As members of BirdLife Finland, we support scientific research and the well-being of bird populations in Finland.

  • Forest protection: We voluntarily protect our forests and aim to establish an officially protected area.

  • Commitment to green energy: We are committed to incorporating more green energy solutions into our operations in the future.

  • Responsible business practices: Jongunjoen Matkailu operates honestly and transparently. Our products and marketing are truthful. We have the necessary permits for our operations and comply with laws, regulations, permit conditions, and agreements.

  • Cooperation: We work closely with other local tourism companies, associations, and municipalities, and participate in joint projects that support economic growth and promote the area as a sustainable travel destination.
